Writer/director Liam Gavin has made a movie where black magic isn't just dangerous and a good way endanger your soul – it's also really, really difficult and it takes a long time. In summary, A Dark Song is a meticulously crafted thriller about a mother's struggle to come to terms with the loss of a child, the story arc is deftly resolved with several twists along the way and the occult dimension gives form to the visceral tournaments on the path to acceptance.A Dark Song isn't that kind of movie. To the director's credit we avoid slipping into mystical camp at every turn, though it remains a challenge to admire our petulant magus character whose hectoring and gratuitous expletives often feel at odds with the building of suspense. Viewers should prepare for a deep dive into occult tradition since A Dark Song is distinguished by a wealth of ceremonial detail, what is often presented with a degree of flippancy is treated here with a seriousness that keeps the action and characters grounded.
The plot follows a bereaved mother who enlists the help of a mystic to perform a sacred ritual with the promise of making contact with her deceased child, but the task is not without danger as the pilgrim's way leads first though a dark and precarious interior. It's true we could do a lot worse than choosing Dark Song for a night of eerie viewing, but don't expect the usual shocks and gore associated with the horror genera as this is a fairly sombre work -and there's not an amorous teen to be found. Not too long ago much of the content featured in this film would be condemned as dangerous and subversive, and that's just the bad language. Although, I thought of it as more arcane occult idea, sigils, summonings, spiritual forces beyond comprehension, rather than HP Lovecraft's version of cosmic horror, ie inconceivable, possibly extraterrestrial, monsters and existential dread. The pacing of this feature is very good, it does not involve any dips in suspense or become dull, continuity was good, it is not a hack and slash, jump scares or gimicky feature of that kind but tries instead to do more of a cosmic horror theme. I thought that the horror component was done well enough, there is some content which I found disgusting, stomach churning even, but it is done well, is not deliberately distasteful without progressing the plot and also crosses over with the emergence of stranger, possibly supernatural, occurrences/ordeals. There are themes of redemption or, at least, coming to terms but also wish fulfillment and the old chestnut about being very careful what you actually wish for as it could be fulfilled in a way you had not anticipated.
As the story unfolds it is interesting to consider whether what is taking place is supernatural or psychological/imagined, this is a well played theme perhaps since Del Toro memorably made it a major theme of Pan's Labyrinth but this feature actually does it particularly well.

The story is one of two persons embarking upon a series of trials and ordeals as part of a ritual magic invocation, they each have different motivations and from early in the feature questions about whether one is a vulnerable, dealing with traumatic personal loss, and the other a mere charlatan, con artist. This is a much better feature than I had expected, it is not a big budget extravaganza, and I actually do think that its let down a little by the special effects towards the end of the feature but its not such that it prejudices the feature altogether, the performances of the two central protagonists is such at you forget its low budget traps for the most part.
